Packing Up for a Long-Distance Move

Packing Up for a Long-Distance Move

Moving is never easy, whether it is from one apartment to another in the same complex or to another house across the country. The number of tasks that have to succeed in tandem, combined with the personal adjustments that need to take place during and after a move can make the whole experience exhausting and stressful. Here is some info to consider if you want to move but aren’t sure how or when to start planning.

Making Plans

This is the basic one. Pack your bags, label everything of importance, and make sure it all gets from point A to point B. If you are moving to someplace like San Francisco, you should also make sure that you know how to get around in general. Depending on which city you are moving to, busses and cabs may or may not be the best way to get around town so make sure to do some research on how much time you can expect to take when travelling around town. For example, in San Francisco you can count on the BART to get you around the city, if not the whole Bay Area, but in Los Angeles you’ll have to rent a car. In New York City, of course, there’s the iconic subway and you can always walk along the sidewalks gazing up at the skyscrapers.

If you are hiring movers then this step is particularly important because you don’t want to leave them out of the loop. This is further complicated if you have pets to take care of. Some pets like the ambilobe panther chameleon are self-contained enough that you should be able to move them without issue if you are careful, but other pets like cats and dogs can be territorially sensitive and require lots of love and comfort if they aren’t comfortable with car rides. It you are moving any reptiles, make sure that you find out about the climate and how much humidity your ambilobe panther chameleon, gecko, or any other reptiles will have to deal with. Also, check out your cage for safety ahead of time and find a reliable, affordable shop for chameleon food. Especially is you’re moving to an expensive city like New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Organizing

Keeping track of everything that you need while moving the entirety of the contents of your house isn’t usually an easy task to coordinate. If you are low on space and you don’t mind looking for some tunics on sale around your locale then perhaps you can throw out some old clothing to save on space for more important things. On the other hand, it is all too easy to lose track of a shirt or a pair of socks while on the move, so taking the time to put everything in their own containers and labelling them may save you effort and frustration down the line. More valuable possessions like jewelry can be carried by hand in a jewelry box rather than in a trailer if you are worried about losing them, but if space is limited don’t be afraid to use packing peanuts and bubble wrap if you need to.

Staying On Track

It is all too easy to lose track of time and end up with delays on top of delays when you have so much stuff to move. Ideally, you should start planning the day you can confirm that you will be moving. Calling in friends can help you speed things along if you are overwhelmed, but the most important of coordinating movers is communication. If gasoline or a cab costs more than you expected, for example, then you need to be able to roll with the punches and find a solution that will keep the whole operation moving forward.

Moving to a distant location is going to be uncertain in one way or another, but it will run more smoothly if you can iron out as many details in advance as you can. If something goes wrong while you are in transit it isn’t the end of the world. All you need to do is step back for a moment, take a breath, and assess the situation as best you can. Once you are finished with your move you can begin to settle in to your new house and it will feel like home in no time, whether it’s on the East Coast or the or the San Francisco Bay Area.
